Supply chain constraints remain a consistent factor in programme delivery, and they tend to become more visible as programmes move beyond prototype and into production. Component availability, obsolescence and extended lead times are not new challenges but given the expected lifespan of many defence systems, they need to be considered across the full life of a product, not just at the point of build. Early review of bills of materials and sourcing strategies generally provides a more predictable route through production and into long-term support.
The Subcon 2026 conference programme reflects how pressing these issues have become. Sessions covering supply chain resilience under geopolitical uncertainty and the use of data analytics to improve demand forecasting and reduce lead times both point to an industry working through the same structural challenges that affect defence programmes specifically stretched sourcing strategies, single points of failure, and the difficulty of planning for systems with decades-long service lives.
