STI continues to strengthen their leadership team by appointing Gareth Bex OBE as the new Commercial Director. Advancing from his previous role, Executive Director – Defence & Security, Gareth will take full responsibility for STI’s global commercial teams; leading on strategy, business development and driving commercial success. Aligning with the new roles of David Taylor, recently appointed as Managing Director and Simon Best, as Chairman, STI is embracing the future with ambitious plans to expand it’s activities in the Aerospace, Defence & Security areas as well as capitalise on it’s recent successes in the medical sector.
Prior to joining STI in March 2020, Gareth served in the British Army for more than 30 years, accumulating extensive experience in high threat, complex environments. His most recent position was in the MOD, providing technical analysis and advice to policy makers and capability sponsors on potential threat systems across all domains. He also commanded 29 Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Search Groups – delivering operational bomb disposal capability world-wide. Prior to that, he oversaw Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Electronics Counter Measures and Search capability development for all 3 services. Due to the advanced technology requirements linked to these roles, Gareth’s Army career was intimately entwined with Science and Technology, guiding him to an MSc in Defence Technology and Chartered Engineer status.
Commenting on his appointment Gareth stated:
“I am delighted to take on the Commercial Director role in STI. My first year, coinciding with the outbreak of the pandemic, was a baptism of fire but in many ways felt very familiar – more like a military operation than routine business. With virtually no notice STI responded rapidly to the requirements of the medical sector, and manufactured ventilators and Covid-19 testers destined for the NHS. I’ve relished learning the ropes in electronics manufacturing and I am determined to play my part in taking STI onto greater achievements in the future, as we realise the benefits of a clear strategy, improved processes, and consolidation of our key customer base. Given STI’s primary focus on the Aerospace, Defence & Security sectors, this will allow me to capitalise on over 3 decades of valuable experience”.
