Surface Technology International’s (STI) Managing Director, Simon Best said “I was absolutely delighted to be part of BDO’s Central South Report 2012 for the region’s Top 150 Companies. When I first started STI I never imagined the company would be in the regional top 150!”
The fifth annual Central South Report again considers how the Top 150 companies, referred to as “the Group”, have fared. It also explores a number of key areas including growth, private equity-backed businesses, listed companies and overseas expansion. In addition, it looks at the mergers and acquisitions landscape, the sustainability agenda, risk management and also features case studies on companies both within and outside the Top 150.
STI were a case study as part of the report with regard to demonstrating some resilience in the current continuing economic downturn and also showing growth through a global strategy and trying to access new markets. STI expanded its PCB assembly plant manufacturing capabilities by investing in a facility in the Philippines in the PEZA zone of Cebu (Philippines Economic Zone Authority – http://www.peza.gov.ph/). STI’s strategy is supported by the BDO report as it identifies that “Overseas expansion has been acknowledged as one of the key ways to achieve growth”.
Simon Best commented “our UK and Philippines manufacturing facilities mirror each other in terms of best practice, business processes and high standards whilst the manufacturing facilities complement each other. Because of the nature of our top UK customers we manufacture PCB assembly to meet lower volume, high mix and high reliability whereas the Philippines can offer higher volume, medium mix builds which in turn means we can enter new markets increasing our range of PCB Assembly offering. We also have the added benefit of having our own Research & Development Team (based in the UK) which enables us to offer end to end solutions, all in-house. Our R&D team can take concepts to final build which shortens the manufacturing process, ensures quality and accuracy all the way through to final build process and the client has assured continuity.”
“I would strongly recommend downloading the BDO report (http://www.bdo.uk.com/library/central-south-report) not only to read about STI[!] but because it gives both insight and inspiration and whilst based on retrospective performance, there are some good ideas and information to help stay at the top of your game”, suggested Simon.
